Makgadikgadi Pan

Makgadikgadi Pan

The Makgadikgadi salt pans are in total contrast to the game-rich Okavango and Linyanti regions and it is highly recommended for all visitors to Botswana who are interested in this country's diversity. There are several species unique to the area such as Gemsbok (Oryx), Brown Hyena, Meerkats (Suricate), Springbok and the great black-maned Kalahari Lion.

The Makgadikgadi is a relic of an ancient superlake that covered much of southern Africa, which dried up thousands of years ago. Each year during the rainy season, the Makgadikgadi transforms into one of the most important wetland sites in Africa. The pans fill with water and they become a breeding ground for huge flocks of flamingo and other migratory birds.

With the rains comes abundance of lush grass and in turn the last surviving migration of Zebra and Wildebeest in southern Africa.
