Family Safaris in Africa
Traditionally African safaris have not been renowned as the most child-friendly of holidays. However, the safari world is changing and with an increasing number of parents wanting their children to learn from travel experiences to “real and unspoilt” destinations, an African family safari is a popular option.
In response to the changing needs of our international visitors, more and more safari camps and lodges now welcome families, and have introduced family rooms, interconnecting rooms, early meal times and babysitting services. Some additionally offer specialist guides and private vehicles, as well as educational adventure activities for the older kids.
Your holiday safari destination will be influenced by the ages of your children. Whilst it is still not ideal to take toddlers on safari in many parts of Africa, across the continent, Kenya is probably still the best choice, with several excellent child-friendly accommodations, perfect for young families.
Many parents are, understandably, concerned about the risks of malaria, and in South Africa there are several malaria-free regions with lodges that welcome children of all ages. Families wanting a classic Big 5 safari in a malarial-free area should consider the Welgevonden Private Reserve in the north east of South Africa, or one of the private game reserves in the Eastern Cape.
If you are travelling with teenagers, your safari options become more diverse, and we can tailor-make your safari tour to include some of the extreme-sport options available in Southern Africa. Dune boarding, white water rafting, shark diving, scuba diving and bungy jumping are all popular with our younger clients! For the ultimate African safari adventure, consider a private mobile camping safari in the deserts and deltas of Botswana and Namibia.
Wherever you choose to travel, a family safari takes careful consideration and planning, but organised properly, it can be the most fulfilling and exhilarating adventure. As parents of young children ourselves, we travel frequently to these safari destinations with our children. We understand your planning needs, and know the accommodations we recommend. We will plan your safari holiday taking you and your children into consideration. Your holiday itinerary will be well balanced, providing all the excitement you expect of an African safari, with well-earned quality relaxation time for the adults as well.
From experience we know that combining a safari with a family beach holiday works well. There are many wonderful family-friendly holiday locations along the East and South African coast, and on the islands of Mauritius and the Bazaruto Archipelago.
