Chobe, Savuti and Linyanti

The Chobe National Park lies to the north east of the Okavango Delta, and is the second largest national park in Botswana, covering 10,566 sq kms. On Chobe's western boundary is the 1,100 sq km Linyanti Private Reserve, and together these vast reserves have some of the greatest concentrations of game found on the African continent. The area is very different from the Okavango Delta, and should be included in every Botswana safari itinerary. The abundance of wildlife and the true African nature of the region, offers an opulent safari experience.

This dynamic and sweeping wilderness is often described as "wildlife-packed", and is renown for its abundance of predators and plains game. It is both geologically diverse and zoologically fascinating; the many varied habitats include riverine forests, savannah, dry woodlands, marshland and the world-famous and unpredictable Savuti Channel.

The temperamental Savuti Channel has a bizarre history of drying up during good rains, and flooding at other times. The Channel feeds the Savuti Marsh - a remnant of a vast inland lake, cut off from its main water supply by the same shifts in the earth's crust that created the Okavango Delta. The Savuti Marsh is part of the Mababe Depression, and is home to a multitude of animals. Vast herds of elephants can be found here, and game-viewing of these pacoderms is particularly good during the dry season. The rains bring thousands of migrating zebras, and with them come the predators - particularly lions and hyenas. The best months to view the migrations are usually November/December and February/March.

There are a number of luxury private camps and lodges in Chobe, Linyanti and Savuti, including

  • Duma Tau
  • King's Pool
  • Chobe Chilwero
  • Chobe Game Lodge
  • Linyanti Tented Camp
  • Savuti Camp
  • Savuti Safari Lodge
